"Jones is not just impressive in building a complex character. Combined with a book that calls for no "fourth wall", and a punk-rock musical score, Jones' learned improvisation skills and vocal prowess are on full display. What I found most impressive, though, was his stamina to guide the show from beginning to end."

ONSTAGE COLORADO REVIEW OF Hedwig and the Angry Inch .png

"As soon as the house lights dim and Hedwig Robinson (Clark Destin Jones) takes center stage — draped in an American flag and sporting a sculpted blond wig — we are keenly aware that executive producer Julia Tobey and award-winning director Kelly Van Oosbree are about to deliver theatrical magic. It is a perfect storm."

"From a glowing review in The New York Times:

“It is … an adult, thought-provoking musical about the quest for individuality, the attempt to forge an identity that works for both the head and heart.”

Everybody I knew related to that quest. It’s why so many of us had moved to New York City in the first place. And it’s one of the reasons Hedwig became such a sensation..."

"I may have never seen this show on Broadway, which has always been a regret of mine. But would a Broadway production, or even the original off-Broadway production, be better than what I saw? Certainly, it would have been full of people who are getting paid more money and who have formal training from more prestigious schools and all of that. But I honestly can’t imagine being any more impressed by the great Neil Patrick Harris and his castmates than I was by Clark Destin Jones and his. In fact, the fact that it didn’t have the budget of a Broadway production made it even more impressive that the production was so well done. This isn’t just budget community theater; this isn’t an amateur production of Hedwig. This is Hedwig as it was always meant to be done."

With a Last-Minute Venue Change,

New Production of
Hedwig and the Angry Inch Is (Almost) Ready for Showtime

The hit musical with a cult following will run for 11 performances August 1 to 17

DENVER, CO (July 17, 2024) — Theater producers are prepared for losing star performers just before a show; that’s why understudies exist. They’re less prepared for losing a venue.

At the start of July, though, Julia Tobey, founder and executive producer of Give 5 Productions, learned that Herman’s Hideaway, where she’d planned to mount an 11-performance run of Hedwig and the Angry Inch starting on August 1, was no longer available.

“As a producer there is no bigger heart attack than hearing the show you’re opening in less than a month has lost its venue,” Tobey said. “We went into crisis mode. We sent out an alert saying we need help, and so many people pitched in to help us find what’s going to be an incredible new venue for this show. This is a real testament to the Denver theater community.”

The new venue is The Arch, at 3001 Walnut Street in the RiNo Art District, run by Non Plus Ultra. Tobey worked with NPU and performance art collective Quixotic, whose immersive show Whiskey Dynamite runs in the space through July 27, to move her production of Hedwig there. “We executed our new venue contract in a single day,” Tobey said.

Since then, she and the Hedwig team have been redesigning their set, lighting, and sound while the four actors and band rehearse the material.

“It’s been a whirlwind, but I’m so grateful that we’re making this work. The show will go on!” Tobey said.

The Tony Award-winning Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a gender-bending musical about an East German rocker on a journey toward self-discovery and acceptance. Often described as a glam rock musical, the show opened in the West Village of New York City in 1998 and became an off-Broadway and then global sensation, with star performances by actors including Neil Patrick Harris, Darren Criss, and Taye Diggs.

Each of the eleven performances of the Denver production, from August 1 to 17, will begin with a variety pre-show curated by Denver drag darling Jessica L’Whor, featuring Colorado drag performances, circus acts, and burlesque. Theatergoers are encouraged (but not required) to dress in ‘80s glam rock attire with East Berlin vibes for a nightly costume contest with prizes.

Tickets are on sale now at www.hedwigdenver.com. Prices range from $29 to $59 per ticket, with a VIP table of four offered for $220.

The role of Hedwig Robinson will be played by Clark Destin Jones. Yitzhak, the play’s other main character, will be played by Emma Rebecca Maxfield and Anne Terze-Schwarz. Learn more about the cast and creative team here.

Pre-show hosts are Jessica L’Whor and Dixie Krystals, with featured performances from America Jackson, Anastasia Krystals, Axel Lexa, Bella Star, Bender Flames, Brittany Blaze-Shearz, Coco Bardot, Dean Dazzle, Enzo Benzo, Foxxy L’Whor, Juiccy Misdemeanor, Khrys’taaal, Krisa Gonna L’Whor, Lulu Krystals, Mariah Spanic, Mario Wanna, Minverva, Petty Patty, Roxanne Stoned, Staza Stone, Talia Tucker L’Whor, and Zarah Misdemeanor.

The original “Hedwig” ran for 857 performances Off-Broadway and won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical, and a special Obie Award for its creators. Its Broadway revival in 2014, starring Neil Patrick Harris, garnered critical acclaim and won four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for Harris.

JOHN MOORE:

"All previously scheduled Herman’s shows are now off, though Fleming said some announced events might yet be accommodated. One that can’t is a highly anticipated theatrical run of the Broadway musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” which had been booked by Julia Tobey of Give 5 Productions to be staged environmentally from Aug. 1-17 at Herman’s Hideaway.

While Tobey was disappointed that Coco Bongo’s did not honor her contract with Roth, she said “Hedwig” will go on as scheduled at The Arch, located at 3001 Walnut St. in RiNo. She said her rock musical will only be the better for the change.

“This production is moving forward in a much larger venue with much higher production values,” Tobey said.

JOHN MOORE:

"I try not to get involved on the front end of the Colorado arts community’s business. But when Give 5 Productions producer Julia Tobey asked for my advice on where she should stage the umpteenth local production of John Cameron Mitchell’s seminal musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” I could not help myself.

“Just don’t stage it in a theater,” I told her. This is the iconic story of a genderqueer singer who is performing in dive bars and bowling alleys while stalking her rock-star ex-lover around the country. Put it in an opulent theater and it immediately loses its sense of place. It needs to be played in dank underground spaces with sticky floors.

So I couldn’t have been happier to receive the news this week that Tobey’s “Hedwig” will play from August 1-17 at Herman’s Hideaway, a sticky-floored staple at 1578 S. Broadway since 1962. Tickets go on sale May 1 at hedwigdenver.com."
